Abstract
A method for reducing free edge interlaminar stresses in quasi-isotropic laminates is investigated. This method involves creating narrow and shallow notches along the straight edges of a coupon specimen in order to disrupt the load path along the free edges. Experimental results indicate that laminate strength can be increased significantly. A failure criterion for laminate specimens with notched edges is introduced to predict the strength.
