Applying Kanter's Theory of Innovative Change: The Transition From a Primary to Attending Model of Nursing Care Delivery

Abstract

To survive the rapid changes in psychiatric care, nursing leaders must develop inno vative nursing care delivery systems that maximize the use of available nursing per sonnel. New systems must be created to ensure that patient care standards are main tained and patient outcomes are positive. This article describes the innovation pro cess involved in the development and implementation of the attending nurse model of advanced practice. Kanter's (1983) five phase model of innovation provides the frame work for the description of the components and complexity of the nurse executive leadership process that ensure successful organizational change.
