Abstract
Online information was originally considered as a complement to the existing traditional information resources, but is now replacing them. By rethinking the whole service, cost-effective and time-saving systems have been designed, with the ability to respond to a wide range of enquiries, with greatly reduced overheads. As end-users have been encouraged by the speed and currency of the information, enquiries have increased in number and complexity, although online does not answer everything. Despite having some proficient end-users, the service is still offered from the library as an intermediary. This controls costs and maximises the resources.
