Abstract
This paper dissents with both the view that globalisation represents the end of national and local identities and the view that it leaves the latter untouched. Instead, it seeks to develop a relational understanding centred around the claim that globalisation represents the intensification of linkage and inter-dependence between different scales of activity. This perspective is used to comment on prospects for regional economic development in a globalising political economy.
