Abstract
The majority of Australia's universities and many colleges of advanced education now have tertiary teaching units. Existing statements, such as the Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee published guidelines for the setting up of tertiary teaching units have failed to suggest appropriate models for teaching units or to propose adequate criteria for evaluating existing units. In the present analysis the functions of tertiary teaching units are examined. Six models for tertiary teaching units are identified together with suggested criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of such units.
