Abstract
This study examined the competencies deemed necessary for incumbents of middle-management positions in manufacturing facilities. The most important competencies were in the areas of communicating, planning, and organizing. These skills are also required of the manager of a small business. Less important skills for mid-managers included staffing, controlling, directing and administering. Implications for designing post-secondary and in-service continuing education programs are examined for both mid-managers and entrepreneurs.
