Abstract
Subjects were asked to listen to short tones of decreasing duration. The durational value at which the first sign of timbre change occurred was recorded for each tone. These values were found to vary with tone frequencies but not with intensity levels, and they did not indicate any certain fixed number of oscillations. Although individual subjects were consistent at their own perceptual task, great deviation was found across subjects.
