Abstract
This article discusses the relationship between underlexicalisation, metaphor and simile in Golding's The Inheritors. It argues that they are deployed to reflect the developing cognitive and linguistic abilities of the novel's characters. It is suggested that certain structures, which may appear metaphorical, are best treated as cases of underlexicalisation.
