Abstract
Moral and empirical issues related to mandatory treatment are identified and discussed. A review of the literature reveals that research studies to date provide no sound empirical evidence to indicate that legal coercion is more effective than voluntarism for the court—referred patient. Critical variables for future study are identified and alternatives to legal coercion are proposed.
