Collapse Load of an Aluminium Hexagonal Assembly of Space Frame Members

Abstract

The collapse load of a hexagonal assembly comprising twelve aluminium space frame members is investigated both experimentally and analytically. Experimental results of deformations and strains demonstrate the nonlinear behaviour of the aluminium assembly. A simplified analytical approach is proposed to take into consideration the geometric nonlinear effects and material yielding effects. The predicted collapse load of the assembly using the simplified approach is found to agree well with the experimental result.
