Abstract

Thirteen uremic diabetic patients were treated with CAPD, using solutions containing 1.4% and 2.5% glycerol. The total follow-up time was 237 patient months. Clinically, this dialysate was well tolerated. Biochemical follow-up demonstrated a slight increase in hematocrit and a stable control of blood urea, creatinine, electrolytes and acid-base parameters. There were no signs of hemolysis and hepatoxicity. Peritoneal ultrafiltration capacity and peritoneal creatinine clearance were well maintained over the whole follow-up period. There was no increase in the peritoneal protein loss with time. The daily blood-glucose profiles demonstrated remarkably stable levels; these were between 1 and 2 g/1 with a dose of intraperitoneally administrated crystalline insulin ranging between SO and 67 U per day. The one and two-year cumulative patient and technique survival rate were 91% and 76%, respectively. The peritonitis incidence was 1/10.7 patient months, but with an unusually high incidence of culture-negative peritonitis.
