Graphic Orientation Disorders of Left Handed Children

Abstract

There are two varieties of abnormal orientation of writing, mirror writing and inverted writing, which occur almost exclusively in left-handed children. Investigation of these writing disturbances demonstrates that mirror writing is a true visual-motor reversal while inverted writing appears to be a sophisticated adaptation of the left-handed child to the writing style standard for the right-handed. Differentiation of mirror writing from developmental dyslexia is suggested by a case presentation showing recovery from mirror writing with severe residual dyselxia.
