Abstract
Nutritional research must be predicated on the fact that present knowledge defines approximately 50 nutrients required by the human body in ratios prescribed by the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA). Obviously each food cannot contain all the nutrients in the exact balance required, necessitating a definition of a "nutritious diet" rather than a "nutritious food." This means that in order to discuss nutrition, a basic knowledge of food composition is required as well as a recognition of the RDA's. Armed with such sound principles, research on nutrition and behaviour may begin. To do otherwise only adds confusion rather than knowledge.
