Abstract
Although several studies have been conducted to explore the relations among nonverbal immediacy behaviors and to test specifically the compensation hypothesis of non-verbal immediacy, these studies have frequently been inadequate for testing this hypothesis. Three methodological requirements for an adequate test of the compensation hypothesis are suggested. These requirements are discussed and new approaches to the study of immediacy regulation are offered.
