Kinetics of anaerobic treatment of landfill leachates combined with urban wastewaters

Abstract

The anaerobic degradation of landfill leachates mixed with domestic wastewater has been studied in a pilot-scale Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor. A previous work in laboratory-scale had shown that a fraction (5%) of the refractory organic matter could be additionally degraded when these two substrates were treated in conjunction, but this synergistic effect in the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal was not reproduced. However, the mass loading rate for which the maximum degradation was obtained was higher for the mixtures (0.5 kg COD/kg SSV·d) than for the separated components (0.18 and 0.19), allowing an increase in the treatment capacity of the leachates. The methane productivity (304 L/kg COD) was close to the theoretical maximum and independent of the proportion of the mixture components. The experimental data were fitted to a modification of Haldane’s kinetic model, in which the parameters depend on the hydraulic residence time and the biomass concentration.
