Abstract
Several recent studies of the leadership roles of principals, elementary and secondary, are reviewed here in an attempt to put into focus what it is that principals do to affect the learning that occurs in their schools. Finally, a very brief consideration is given to the relevance of preparation programs and certification requirements.
