Abstract
The time dependence of shear strains and shear stresses due to creep and relaxation in adhesive bondlines of specimens with thick metal adherends was investigated at ambient temperature. The interpretation of the creep com pliance curves indicates a nonlinear viscoelastic behavior of the adhesive bondlines. Hence, simple spring dashpot models cannot properly describe the creep and relaxation of adhesives. For design purposes isochronous shear stress-strain curves are preferable as demonstrated for a typical lap joint.
