Abstract
A first-ply failure (FPF) analysis of laminated composite cylindrical panels is presented in this paper. In the computation of stress and strain components, a 3D layerwise mixed stress-displacement finite element model is employed. The maximum stress, Tsai-Hill, Tsai-Wu, and Hoffman failure theories are used in the prediction of the FPF loads. This study illustrates that all four theories provide more or less the same FPF loads. The effects of the ply layup scheme, the fiber orientation angle, the panel thickness, the loading direction, and the location of the opening on the FPF loads of laminated cylindrical panels, are studied.
