Abstract
In the past, research on the relationship between attitudes toward work and toward retirement focused primarily on men. The study presented here explored this relationship from a female perspective. A regression model was derived in which work commitment helped explain women's attitudes toward retirement. Reconciling this model with theories negating the importance of attitudes toward work revealed the failure of previous research to distinguish between two work variables: job satisfaction and commitment to work. Thus research from a female perspective can clarify the salient research question and is critical for understanding both women's lives and generic human behavior.
