Abstract
Saturated p-hydrazinobenzoic acid in pyridine apparently condenses with periodate oxidized 1,2-glycols in the same manner as phenylhydrazine. After treatment of tissue sections with p-hydrazinobenzoic acid, the carbon-1 carboxyl group of this compound is available for histochemical study. Carboxylation of tissues may also be accomplished by exposure of paraffin sections to succinic anhydride. The effect of carboxylating tissue sections by these two procedures was compared in preparations stained by the periodic-acid-Schiff procedure, or with alcian blue or toluidine blue. The results of this study were, in turn, compared with staining reactions of sulfate esterified tissue sections.
