Abstract
Computer spreadsheets are widely used for a variety of modelling tasks and provide an interface that is well understood by most users. This paper presents a discrete-event simulation system using a spreadsheet as an input/output device which provides a platform on which to widen the base of simulation users. In an educational setting the system can provide an introduction to the student of the concepts behind the discrete-event method. Once the students grasp these concepts, they are better equipped to construct models using specialised simulation software. In a business setting the system could provide an introduction to the technique to a new set of end-users. A case study of a supermarket system is presented to show how the software can be used in an educational context.
