Abstract
This article briefly outlines Italy's recent policies on time-use patterns in cities, and focuses on the way local authorities have involved residents (as citizens), in these processes. New legislation approved in 1990 granting mayors the power to coordinate the city's working and service hours is discussed with reference to several changes in the role of local government, to women and to existing time-use patterns.
