Abstract
This article looks at the historic foundations of professional counseling and then summarizes William Glasser’s most recent ideas as presented in this issue of The Family Journal. Although psychiatry, psychology, and social work have embraced the medical and mental illness models, professional counseling continues to have a strong focus on health, wellness, growth, development, and prevention. Professional counselors know that Glasser is correct when he asserts that mental health (as opposed to illness) is most important.
