Abstract
Urban children and adolescents are faced with many stressors that affect their mental health and that currently are not being addressed effectively by the various mental health professionals working in schools. In this article, the authors argue that blending school psychology and school counseling training to produce comprehensive school mental health specialists could better address the identified social and emotional needs of children in urban schools. Such a shift could result in more comprehensive, coordinated school mental health services and lead to improved academic performance.
