Abstract
We spend one third of our lives asleep. Difficulty sleeping, poor quality sleep and lack of sleep can impact our physical, psychological and social well-being. Inadequate sleep is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes. Sleep deprivation can affect drivers and impact on road safety. It is therefore important that sleep problems are diagnosed and treated appropriately. This article considers the pathophysiology of common sleep disorders, presentation in primary care, how GPs can treat some common sleep problems and indications for referral.
