Abstract
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental illness characterised by recurrent, intrusive thoughts that are usually associated with repetitive mental or physical behaviours. The thoughts and behaviours are often distressing and difficult to control. They take up significant amounts of time, impacting on the person’s ability to live their daily life. OCD affects approximately 1 to 2% of the population during their lifetime. Despite this high prevalence, the diagnosis is frequently missed or delayed. Patients may wait years or decades to start treatment. There are several effective treatments available and many patients can be successfully managed within primary care. This review briefly discusses additional disorders that are associated with OCD, including body dysmorphic disorder.
