Abstract
Approximately 1 person in 20 in the UK has a personality disorder (PD), and so GPs will often encounter people with a PD in routine clinical practice. However, PDs are poorly understood and can have severe consequences for a patient’s health, e.g. self-harm and their ability to function in society. Therefore, it is important for GPs to understand PDs, so that they can safely help patients, manage their care in the community and refer when needed. This article aims to provide a practical guide for GPs with information and guidance relevant to clinical practice.
