Abstract
An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a serious condition, due to its frequency and high mortality with rupture; however, there is an improved outlook achieved with elective versus emergency repair. The drive is to identify these aneurysms early, so that patients can have surgical fixation in an elective setting. This article will highlight the areas where GPs are essential in improving the management of AAA, in particular, prompt diagnosis and referral of ruptured AAAs, and early AAA diagnosis through screening. It will also explore the different surgical options, with particular emphasis on the risks associated with AAA repair, especially in an emergency setting.
