Abstract
This article brings social analysis to bear on technical and professional writ ing by examining the differing conditions of professionalism in the fields of science, engineering, and, peripherally, law. The article posits a relationship between the social and political conditions of a field, and the conventions of language use in certain fields. The writing ofscience is used as an example to illustrate such a semiotic relationship.
