Middle Manageis in the Bargaining Unit

Abstract

The introduction of collective bargaining to the California State University system created the single largest faculty bargaining unit in the nation. Academic department chairs were placed in the faculty unit, thereby recognizing their primary professional ties but ignoring the managerial responsibili ties of these in-unit managers. Their experience indicates that collective bargaining has had a modest though not unimportantimpactupon their roles, although potential difficulty may lie ahead for them in their relationships with the senior managers to whom they report.
