Can NOT-Capitalism Lie at the End of History, or Is Capitalism's History Drawing to an End ?

Abstract

■ This article argues that capitalism's victory over 'actually existing social ism' implies no telos or ultimate end in human history. Rather, capitalism is being assimilated, principally in China, in ways which may yet alter or transform its structures and which are inconsistent with Francis Fukuyama's vision. New forms of collective and communal property in industrializing China are discussed and contrasted with privatization schemes in Eastern Europe and the Russian Feder ation.
