Abstract
A content analysis of more than 900 stories taken from two national and two regional newspapers suggests that news stories can be sorted more easily by certain values—such as conflict, proximity, and prominence—than by the traditional five Ws and H. This study argues that journalists employ a common “value coding,” and—using this coding—one can account for about 98% of the leads of stories appearing on sample front pages.
