Abstract
The paper describes the stages in design, development and manufacture which have led to the successful introduction of magnox fuel into the first phase of the British nuclear programme. Significant design problems are discussed and attention is directed towards the main limitations in fuel performance and endurance. Detailed results of fuel irradiation trials are presented and future developments are discussed.
