Abstract
I. The nitrogen behaviour and the spectrophotometric U.V. absorption of blood plasma flowing; back from the liver and of blood from the posterior vena cava was studied in rats under DAB treatment and under normal and Cantero diet. II. A decrease in nitrogen content and in the values of U.V. extinction was observed in plasma from animals fed Cantero diet. This is likely depending on protein deficiency of such a diet. III. In the DAB treated rats the increase of the nitrogen content in blood plasma flowing back from the liver, which is probably dependent on an increase of nitrogen compounds from liver, is generally consistent with a diminution of the U.V. extinction values. This behaviour is suggested to represent a qualitative or structural change in plasma proteins. IV. In hepatoma bearing animals, the nitrogen increase in plasma reflowing from peripheral zones and the decrease of that coming back from the liver would suggest a larger local nitrogen exploitment, whereas the extinction increase, observed in both plasma samples, may be related to changes in the composition or structure of protein molecules.
