Abstract

This review was prepared for a Consensus Development Conference on the Safety of Intravenous Drug Delivery Systems that will be held at the Royal Palms Hotel and Castitas in Phoenix, Arizona on September 27 and 28, 1999. The purpose of this conference is to evaluate the relative safety of the currently available nonelectronic intravenous infusion systems that are used for medication administration. The following systems will be reviewed: IV push, augmented IV push (syringe pumps), point-of-care activated systems (Minibag Plus, ADDVantage), pharmacy-based IV admixture, and manufacturer prepared (premixed, frozen, outsourced). An independent panel of experts will hear presentations about the efficiency, safety, and cost of these systems and prepare a preliminary statement about their relative safety.
