Abstract

Repurposing used tires into fuel could help address environmental degradation and the fast depletion of fossil fuel resources to some extent. In this work, an attempt has been made to control the emissions by combining fuel modification and after treatment techniques. Fuel modification is done through antioxidant additive addition with the fuel blend to mitigate the prompt NOx emission and catalytic converter for additional emission reduction. The test results indicate that used tire oil may be a good substitute for fossil fuels. NO emissions were reduced by 15.3% for the 300 ppm antioxidant addition at full load. Whereas NO emissions were reduced by 21.1% with the incorporation of the catalytic converter. However, the maximum NO emission reduction achieved was 30.5% by combining antioxidants with fuel and incorporating a catalytic converter.
