Time-delay compensation for actuator-based hardware-in-the-loop testing of a jet engine fuel control unit

Abstract

Actuator-based hardware-in-the-loop is a form of hardware-in-the-loop testing where the hardware components are mechanical systems. Hardware-in-the-loop testing of mechanical components requires an additional transfer system which typically comprises sensors and actuators to link the software and hardware. Inaccuracy and instability can occur during actuator-based hardware-in-the-loop testing if the time delay due to the transfer system dynamics is not properly compensated for. This paper presents a new application of the Smith predictor strategy for hardware-in-the-loop testing of an electro-hydraulic fuel control unit for a turbojet engine. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the method for time-delay compensation of actuator-based hardware-in-the-loop testing.
