Abstract
The present study focused on the development of environmentally friendly intumescent char forming coatings for wood and polymeric materials. This resulted in a method for the catalytic oxidation of polysaccharides, seeds and lignin by oxygen. The main products of the oxidation of such raw materials are salts of the corresponding polyoxy and polyphenoxy acids. In addition to that, the efficiency of the flame retardancy achieved for wood and polymeric materials by novel intumescent surface coatings based on these modified renewable starting materials was examined. Flammability tests of wood and polymeric samples treated with the oxidised substrates confirmed their powerful fire protection.
