Abstract
The considerable amount of literature published on the interaction of an airborne acoustic wave with the ground surface is primarily concerned with the reflected wave and its effect on noise measurement and prediction. This review is concerned with the resulting wave motion within the ground and the effect on it of various characteristics of the source and the ground, all of which have received little systematic investigation. The previous work from a wide variety of contexts is reviewed and augmented using loudspeaker, thunderflash and aircraft sources. The conclusion is that much more data is required on well specified sources and well known local ground structure before the problems of interpretation will be eased.
