Abstract
Using factor-analytic methodology, the structure of interpersonal interaction was explored in three different historical periods approximately 1,000 years apart. Frequencies of various dyadic interactions were recorded in a sample from the Iliad, in Beowulf, and in 7he Red Badge of Courage. Results generally supported claims that interpersonal structures are universal, but also suggested the existence of an evolutionary process toward more formalized interpersonal relations.
