Abstract

ONE OF THE problems of congested urban areas involves traffic accidents. It affects the quality of daily life and has major social and economic consequences. Road traffic accidents are an epidemic of modern times. Epidemio logical studies are important for its control. Three factors are usually blamed: the driver, the vehicle and the environment. This study has revealed the magnitude of the problem during six years in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The following facts have emerged: There is a high factor of excessive speed (66%); high percentage of non licenced drivers (40%); high rate of accidents by drivers aged 18-30 (46%); and high percentage of pedestrian involvement (36%). Recommendations to improve the situation are made.
