Abstract
The intrinsic scientific interest of biogenetic engineering, and the wide publicity it has received, has tended to create the impression that it is on the verge of replacing traditional methods of plant breeding. This article sets its possibilities in perspective, and argues that although much progress can be expected from working at the cellular and molecular level, existing techniques will remain of fundamental importance for the foreseeable future.
