Abstract
Although the basic design of milking machines has remained unchanged for fifty years or more, there have been enormous advances in our understanding of the way in which the machine operates and the effect that it has on the cow. This has led to considerable improvements in performances, although how much is due to the machine and how much to breeding is uncertain. In addition to this, new technology has enabled greater sophistication in monitoring and controlling the milking process.
