Abstract
Simplification and specialization on the farm are part of the agricultural revolution of the 20th century, a change not yet fully accomplished in Britain. Continuous, or intensive, cereal growing is an attractive goal; pioneers have shown that the maintenance of high cereal yields is possible. Nevertheless, the practice may encounter difficulties—some of them now well understood and not insuperable—that are discussed in the article.
