The agronomic value of anhydrous ammonia in Western Europe

Abstract

In the U.S.A., commercial development of fluid nitrogen fertilizers has proceeded rapidly; in Europe the pace has been much slower. It is pertinent to enquire into the cause of this discrepancy and, in particular, to investigate whether climatic or soil conditions play a significant rôle. The author reviews the results of field trials in many European countries and does in fact conclude that mild, wet winters place a severe restriction on autumn application of ammonia.
