Abstract

Overall views of the pattern of land utilisation, and changes in it, are of great importance to those concerned with formulation of agricultural policy. Until recently, however, the available survey methods were too slow and expensive to provide detailed information about the world's vast tracts of agricultural land and forests, except for limited areas. Within the last few years, however, this situation has been dramatically changed with the advent of remote sensing from satellite platforms in space.
