Abstract
■ Nepal has an isolated population where diarrhoeal disease is one of the main causes of infant death. ■ The distinctions made about causes and consequences of abdominal problems are considered. ■ Cognitive mapping was used to elicit mothers' ideas of diarrhoea, constipation and vomiting. ■ Literacy programmes have been introduced. ■ Diagrammatic research can be useful in a culture which is predominantly oral in tradition.
