Abstract
This paper describes the processing characteristics and properties of PF-611, a new high performance polypropylene (PP) extrusion coating grade. A result of technology developed at the Himont Research and Development Center, this resin exhibits strain hardening behavior when the polymer melt is extended As a result PF-611 does not exhibit melt resonance at draw ratios greater than 100:1 while providing thin uniform coatings. Therefore, it is not necessary to minimize draw ratios by reducing the die gap to prevent the onset of melt resonance. The ex ceptional melt strength of PF-611 permits coextrusion coating with conventional PP grades and non-PP barrier resins without significant reduction in processability (high maximum line speeds, low coat weights and low neck-in)
