Abstract
A system of statewide early intervention for children with developmental delays and those with disabilities was established in Bavaria in the 1970s. The concept, development, and experiences of the Bavarian early intervention system are traced through a historical perspective. Current discussions, pros and cons of proximal (homebound) and centralized (center-based) services, the call for a changing paradigm of early intervention, and perspectives concerning Bavarian early intervention are covered.
