Abstract
In this article, two general issues are discussed: first, the functional parts of measuring systems and the critical nature of designing primary sensing structures, defining stable functional-part relationships and providing suitable packaging arrangements for the sensory elements, and second, the new sciences and technologies being applied to measurement instrumentation. The coherent systematic approach to measurement theory and practice and the multi-disciplinary nature of measurement science and technology are thus illustrated.
